SOUTH STREET BRIDGE

SOUTH STREET BRIDGE

REOPENED

Philadelphia, PA – Streets Department Commissioner Clarena I.W. Tolson announced today that a reopening ceremony for the South Street Bridge will be held on Saturday, November 6 at 3 PM.

The new 1,800-ft. long bridge and viaduct is scheduled to reopen to traffic during the evening of November 6th. The bridge was closed to all motor vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic on December 8, 2008.
Commissioner Tolson notes that this major construction project is being delivered to travelers and tax payers ahead of schedule and on budget.

“The earlier than scheduled reopening of the South Street Bridge is a cause for celebration, particularly for the local community and all those who rely on the bridge to cross the Schuylkill River.

All Philadelphians are invited to join the reopening ceremony and be among the first pedestrians and bicyclists to cross the bridge. It will be a unique opportunity to walk and bike in the travel lanes of the bridge and enjoy fabulous views of Philadelphia’s skyline.” Access to the bridge for pedestrians and bicyclists will be made available beginning at 2 PM on November 6th.
SOUTH STREET BRIDGE 2
***************************************
In early 2006, local elected officials, community leaders, business owners and civic groups joined together to form the South Street Bridge Coalition. The Coalition pushed for improvements to the design of the bridge. The collaboration between the Coalition and Streets Department resulted in a more balanced pedestrian-, bicycle- and vehicle-friendly design that serves the needs of all bridge users. .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New features include wider sidewalks, a mid-block signalized pedestrian/bicycle crossing at the Schuylkill River trail, wider green colored bicycle lanes, a reduction in vehicle lanes, relocation of street lights, and traffic signal adjustments optimized for pedestrian movements and safety
PHILADELPHIA – When the National Museum of American Jewish History opens its new $150 million, 100,000-square-foot building in the heart of historic Philadelphia November 14, it will be the only museum in the nation dedicated solely to telling the story of Jews in America.
The exhibition was designed by Gallagher & Associates, one of the nation’s leading exhibition design firms. Organized chronologically into different time periods from 1654 to the present, each floor of the core exhibition vividly evokes the diversity of the American Jewish experience. Through displays of historical artifacts, immersive environments and cutting-edge interactive technology, the core exhibition explores the religious, cultural, political and economic stories of American Jews.
Gaya, named after the gayageum, a popular Korean stringed instrument resembling a zither, is the largest Korean restaurant in the commonwealth.
The main dining room seats 125 and there are three private rooms suitable for smaller parties. The complex – that features the two restaurants. - Also houses a 300-seat banquet facility that can be subdivided into four smaller rooms for parties or business meetings of various sizes. There is ample parking for 200 cars in the lot.
"Korean food is not greasy," "It is more healthful. Cooking in our smokeless barbecue pit, all the fat goes down, leaving only the best part to eat.
"Our cuisine, which is sweet and spicy, goes back 5,000 years. Our cooking is an art."
Gaya is contemporary - cream walls, dark woods, highly polished marble floor, tables set with crossed American and South Korean flags.
Each table has a gas BBQ grill; special ducting and ventilation system built in minimize smoke in the dining room. Even with the meat sizzling on the grill, most of the smoke was sucked back down and vented outside. - reviews
"The Most Genteel Tavern in America" - John Adams
This is the spot where the likes of Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Paul Revere, George Washington, and John Adams hung out. Philadelphia has tons of history going for it and The City Tavern is a big part of the picture. The truth is the City Tavern went through some difficult times (not to mention the fire that actually destroyed the building in 1834). It was a very good restaurant back in the day (1776)
There are seven intimate dining rooms, three wine cellar rooms, and a beautiful garden for some of the best outdoor dining in the area.
McGillin’s Olde Ale House threw open its doors the year Lincoln was elected president.
That’s shortly after the Liberty Bell cracked and long before ground was broken for Philadelphia City Hall.
The beer taps have been flowing since 1860 -- making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia.
It has outlasted Strawbridge’s, the Civil War
and even Prohibition.
What’s the secret? McGillin’s has become just like the fictional “Cheers”- with camaraderie, good food at a reasonable price and the best selection of local & regional beers on tap. McGillin's is Philadelphia's best Irish pub.
Finnigans Wake has its own unique story, in a building that was once a coffin manufacturer. Its Quiet Man Pub has memorabilia from the 1951 movie The Quiet Man, with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, filmed in western Ireland. Due to its huge size, the atmosphere of Finnigans Wake tends toward the night clubbish, boisterous crowd, as opposed to the smaller Irish pubs in Center City.
